Prospect Watch: Dennis McCann

In boxing, there are levels when it comes to professional fighters. The present, the up and coming, and the future. It doesn’t matter where you fight professionally, those stages in boxing are tried and true. This will forever be the rules.

When it comes to the British boxing scene, fighters like Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Callum Smith are considered the fighters of now. Prospects/contenders such as Daniel Dubois and Joshua Buatsi are considered on the cusp. As far as the future, Bantamweight Dennis McCann (7-0, 5 KOs) is someone pundits have tabbed as possibly “the one”!

The 19-year-old from Kent, England is called “The Menace” and has a deep amateur background. This included a 50-4, 16 KO record, a Bronze medal at European Games, and a nine amateur championships.

LOFTY COMPARISONS AND EXPECTATIONS

Tall for a Bantamweight at 6’0″, he signed with Promoter Frank Warren and MTK Global in March 2019. He’s already been tabbed as a future world champion and drawn comparisons to Hall Of Fame inductee “Prince” Naseem Hamed.

Making his professional debut in May 2019, you can see why so many are excited based on watching him on film. A natural southpaw, he displays excellent footwork and maneuvers around the ring with ease.

His array of skills for such a young fighter is eye-catching as he’s shown power in both hands. He’s sure to become a fan-favorite because of his talent and his flashy style.

WHEN CAN YOU CATCH HIM?

McCann has dominated his first seven opponents but will take a step up in class in his next bout against Pedro Matos (7-3) on October, 10th at the BT Sports Studio in Stratford, England.

The teenager’s swag in the ring is matched by his confidence. In that regard, his ebullience matches his idol, Hamed who was known for his self-belief during his fight days. As McCann explained to British Boxing News, it is lights out for Matos as he embarks on a path to boxing greatness.

“This year has been a very big one for me and I will do the same thing against better opposition as what I’ve been doing to most opponents.

“I will be putting them to sleep! Never mind just stopping them. I believe Matos will be going that way.

“You either have it or you don’t, although you have to live the life and be dedicated. The best like Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford, and Vasyl Lomachenko were born with that talent.

“The elite fighters are born with it and I was also 100 percent, for sure.”

While you’re never really sure how a fighter will develop and what heights he or she can reach, it’s always exciting when a young prodigy hits the scene.

McCann has the look, talent, and attitude of someone worth paying serious attention to over the next few years.
