Eddie Hearn Bears No Ill Will Towards Canelo Alvarez for Jumping to PBC

When it comes to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) and his decision to depart DAZN for Premiere Boxing Champions (PBC), promoter Eddie Hearn understands his decision. Having worked with Alvarez for the past three fights, Hearn knows the undisputed super middleweight champion made the correct business decision. To be quite honest, the only surprising part of this news is that Alvarez agreed to a multi-fight deal instead of a single-fight deal.

Once talks for a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol fell apart, it paved the way for Al Haymon to come in and offer Alvarez a lucrative deal that he couldn’t refuse. Outside of his reported September fight with WBC 160-pound champion Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs), no other details about other possible opponents have been released.

Speaking to iFL TV, Hearn discussed the departure of Alvarez.

“I spoke to him last night. We haven’t gotten anything for Canelo; we haven’t made him an offer, and I knew that he was going to be making a move on the Charlo fight. I don’t know the details of the multi-fight deal. A little bit surprised, but I think it’s a good move for him, in all honesty. He’s at that stage now, which is probably the closing phase of his career. We’ve done his last seven out of eight fights because we’ve had the opponents and the fights that he needs. We couldn’t make the Bivol fight, and therefore I don’t have a fight for him.”

It’s good to see that the Matchroom head man harbors no ill feelings. At the end of the day, business should never be personal, especially if every aspect of a deal is fulfilled.
