Jaron Ennis Dethrones Xander Zayas at 154 and Declares Open Season on Division
While staging his second fight in the division, rising boxing star Jaron “Boots” Ennis (36-0, 32 KO’s) was forced to dig deep to snag his latest stoppage win. In this episode, Ennis took on and defeated the talented, popular and heavily groomed Xander Zayas (23-1, 13 KO’s) by way of seventh round TKO. With the Zayas conquest secured, Ennis also took possession of the Puerto Ricans’ WBO and WBA super welterweight titles.
When queried as to who he would like to mix it up with next, Boots remained extremely open and non-committal. Rather than verbalize any particular opponent, the newly crowned two-division champion opted to pass the mic to Eddie Hearn, his Matchroom Boxing promoter, in order to fill in those particular blanks.
Unfortunately, when Hearn was on the mic, he was no more precise than Boots was. Yet, he did at least toss out some viable names.
“Look, when you become unified, you want to become undisputed. We didn’t get a chance to do that at ’47 and now we’re going to try to do it at ’54. Josh Kelly [IBF champion] is fighting July 25. He wants big fights. We’ve already spoken to the PBC, Luis DeCubas about [WBC champion Sebastian] Fundora. I love that match up as well and also Vergil Ortiz. That’s a fight that must get made. But at the same time, I think he’ll [Ortiz] will want a run out [tune up] – he’s been out for a year.
But as I have said, this is the guy [Ennis]. This is the money now in the division and we’re not looking to be difficult. We’re just letting everybody know Jaron Boots Ennis is a superstar in boxing and he has come to win every belt at 154, 160 and 168!”
Those are big words. It will interesting to see what is next for Boots after this big and thrilling victory.
