Erika Cruz Fights Nazarena Romero to a Draw

WBA super bantamweight champion Erika “Dinamita” Cruz (17-2-1, 3KO) and challenger Nazarena “Capricho” Romero (13-0-1, 7KPO) ended their fight in a draw.

Capricho did a good job early aiming the jab at the body and then coming up with a hook upstairs. Her counterpunching ability and quick combinations kept the champion off balance in the first couple of rounds.

Yet, Dinamita wasn’t going to give up without a fight and was able to land a couple of hard counter right hands. She won the second half of the fight by throwing more punches.

In the middle rounds, Cruz found a pattern of attack that worked as she cranked up the volume. The champion found a home for the left hand over the challenger’s low jab.

Romero was money with that jab to the body and hook upstairs to control distance. In addition, she went on a solid body attack, looking to slow down Cruz’s aggression.

There were several clashes of heads as Cruz continued to lead with the head. Yet, both women fought hard, throwing caution to the wind and letting those punches fly until the final bell.

In a fight that was hard to score, one judge scored it 97-93 Cruz, 97-93 Romero, with the last judge seeing it 95-95, making it a draw. During the post-fight interview, Cruz wasn’t interested in a rematch and will look for a unification next.
