Floyd Schofield Survives Rene Tellez Giron and Eyes Stevenson
It was far from perfect for unbeaten lightweight Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs), but he was able to do enough to earn a unanimous decision (118-109, 118-109, 116-111) over Rene “El Bravo” Tellez Giron (20-4, 13 KOs) at Virgins Hotel in Las Vegas.
This fight was more rugged than the scores indicate. After boxing well in the first two rounds, Schofield was staggered by a Tellez left hook in the final minute of round three. Kid Austin got back in boxing mode and controlled the action during the majority of the remaining rounds. However, El Bravo had his moments and dropped a tiring Schofield in round eleven. Schofield was able to gather his resources and had a strong final round.
Schofield is ranked second by WBA at 135. Following this victory, he called for a fight with reigning WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
