Frank Warren on Joshua vs Fury: “We still got a ways to go”
News of WBC Heavyweight champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (30-0-1, 21ko), and fellow British fighter unified champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (24-1, 22ko) signing a two-fight deal set social media on fire. This fight is to crown the first-ever four-belt undisputed heavyweight champion. According to Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren of Queensbury promotions, there are still things that need to be done. By his account, rival British promoter Eddie Hearn jumped the gun by releasing a statement via Twitter.
Warren, during an interview with TalkSport, revealed some news that will take the air out of the balloon for some of the fans.
“Everybody signed an agreement that there would be no announcements unless they were joint announcements and that came out of the blue yesterday.”
“I believe it will happen when they get in the ring. We’ve still got a way to go.”
That last statement will not inspire much confidence among fans and pundits. However, before everyone re-engages the panic button, the Queensbury promoter did provide a little piece of reassurance.
“Everybody is on the same page to make this work. We are all collectively working to get a venue sorted now.”
Undoubtedly, several fans are going to feel like they have been duped. However, that is not the case, especially considering both champions have put ink to paper, so the fight will happen.
WHY DID HEARN DROP THE NEWS?
Hearn is a very crafty promoter and is always in tune with what is going on surrounding boxing on social media. The British promoter has been hearing the whispers of fans who believe the fight will not happen.
There is the case of Fury’s statement on ESPN+ saying he did not know jack about the fight happening. This could have prompted the Matchroom Boxing/DAZN promoter to drop some news to bring the confidence of the fans back up from the dungeon. Also, money is always a motivational factor. The boxing community’s interest level in the fight skyrocketed after the news dropped. Moreover, the fire has to stay hot until the biggest hurdle of finding a venue to take advantage of such a big fight is secured.
Big fights generally take the most time to get done because of all the parties involved, and the different networks are ironing out all the details.
