Golden Boy and Cotto Promotions to Host Melvin Jerusalem vs Oscar Collazo

Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions have won the promotional rights for the upcoming contest between reigning WBO minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem (20-2, 12 KOs) and mandatory challenger Oscar Collazo (6-0, 4 KOs). 3kingsboxing.com has kept close tabs on the situation. Here’s how Golden Boy and Cotto pulled this off.

The WBO held a purse bid for the contest on February 27 at their offices in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Bidding on behalf of Jerusalem was his handlers, Kameda Promotions. Golden Boy and Cotto Promotions, co-promoters of Collazo, represented the mandatory challenger.

With a bid of $152,000, Team Collazo won out over Kameda, who bid $101,000. Per the WBO rules, the defending champion receives seventy-five percent of the purse. Collazo will get twenty-five percent.

WHAT BROUGHT US TO THIS POINT

Jerusalem won the WBO strap on January 6, 2023, with a second-round stoppage over Masataki Taniguchi. Collazo became the WBO mandatory challenger following a fifth-round destruction over Yudel Reyes on January 28. The sanctioning body ordered Jerusalem-Collazo on January 30.

With Golden Boy and Cotto Promotions now owning the promotional rights, look for the fight to occur either in Collazo’s home country of Puerto Rico or in the United States. Word on the street is that late May is a target date. When or wherever it lands, look for the match to air on DAZN.
