Eddie Hearn Optimistic On Signing Katie Taylor vs Chantelle Cameron
Signs are pointing toward a showdown between undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) and undisputed junior welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs). As 3kingsboxing.com reported, Taylor is interested in moving up to 140 to fight Cameron on May 20 in Taylor’s home country of Ireland.
HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
Both fighters happen to be promoted by Eddie Hearn. During an interview on Matchroom Boxing, Hearn gave an update on the status of that possible matchup.
“We’ve got to agree on money on both sides. We’re not a million miles away, but you’ve seen the reaction to that fight. It’s a tremendous fight. I think it could be a tougher fight than Amanda Serrano.
Chantelle is the bigger fighter. She’s very aggressive, she punches very hard, and she’s believed for a long time she wins that fight. Fair play to Katie Taylor . . . I believe we can get Taylor-Cameron over the line next week.”
Hearn went on to say that he needs to sit with the executives at DAZN for scheduling purposes. But the promoter is hopeful and seems confident all parties will come together and agree to a deal for a fight between Cameron and Taylor.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
Taylor was to fight a rematch with undisputed featherweight champion Amanda Serrano on the same May 20 date in Dublin, Ireland. It was to be a homecoming bout for the lightweight champion. However, Serrano withdrew due to an undisclosed injury.
With Serrano on the shelf, Cameron said she was more than willing to step in for Serrano and fight Taylor. Taylor is now saying “let’s do it”.
FINALLY GETTING HER SHOT?
Cameron vs Taylor is a fantastic matchup and would be a big draw in Ireland. Cameron has wanted to face Taylor for years. It looks like she finally gets her chance. Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing.com for continued updates.
