Is Ryan Garcia Overlooking Rolly Romero?

Without question, one of the most anticipated fights of 2025 is the Devin Haney versus Ryan Garcia rematch. Their competitive amateur rivalry has spilled over to the professional ranks in controversial, bad-blood fashion. First though, “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO’s) must defeat Rolando “Rolly” Romero (16-2, 13 KO’s) on May 2.

Throughout his tenure at 135, Romero was universally regarded as the runt of the litter, talent wise. Now that the talk is over, will King Ry be able to conquer the brash and zany Rolly in the squared circle? Can he show real separation in actual combat? Sure, Garcia has his famed deadly left hook. Yet, history has recorded Garcia going at least six rounds with every opponent dating back to 2020.

Even Haney, who the boxing world loves to clown, went all twelve after gobbling up a greedy belt-popping Thanksgiving portion of King Ry’s special made, heavy left hooks. Said to say, there is a high likelihood that Rolly goes quite a few rounds with Garcia. That would leave Romero plenty of time to smother Garcia’s face with his own homemade hot sauce.

WHO’S THE FAVORITE?

Garcia has notoriously bad defense and already been dropped by Gervonta Davis and Luke Campbell. To make matters worse, Garcia has a history with Rolly where, years ago, Romero once dominated King Ry in a sparring session. Despite the passage of time, Rolly no doubt has held onto some semblance of a psychological edge.

This is seemingly a tremendous mental load that Garcia would be contending with. His super fight with Haney hanging in the balance will surely only complicate things further. If he rises to the occasion, then kudos are in order for Garcia. Realistically speaking though, King Ry has been a poster boy for mental health, relied on chemicals, whether it be recreational or otherwise when under pressure, and routinely evades accountability when called to task.

This wishy-washy mentality, leaky defense, huge changes in his camp and apparent inability to end fights early should culminate in a fair amount of in-ring suspense come fight night. In a true battle of, “whoever lands first”, let’s see who takes the occasion the most seriously and lands the most cleanly!
