Teofimo Lopez Obliterates IBF Champ Commey in 2!

In what was supposed to be his sternest test to date, Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez (15-0, KO’s) absolutely destroyed the former IBF world lightweight champion Richard “RC” Commey (29-3, 26 KO’s) in two blistering rounds. Although it was serving as the co-main event, throughout the boxing world it was Commey v Lopez that had everyone all antsy and itching for the clang of the first round bell. It’s was supposed to be a war. In the end, it was a massacre.

THE BREAKDOWN

In round one, both men threw the feel-out process directly out the window and began throwing with deadly intent. Even though the punches were menacing, neither boxer was reckless. Lopez was the cobra in the weeds opting to counter, while Commey lead the action with an all-purpose lead jab and crisp right hand. The duo of punches appeared to greatly trouble El Brooklyn.

During the last minute of the first period, Teofimo Lopez began connecting with a number of crunching power shots. In particular, a nasty left hook stood out. While Commey did not register any overt damage, there was definitely danger in the air. The danger became manifest moments later.

At the top of the second round, when both boxers simultaneously attacked, Lopez dropped RC with a neck wrenching right hand. Showing a chin worthy of a comic book hero, Commey made it back to his feet. However, he was swaying like an after-hours Saturday night drunk. Referee David Fields gave the seriously wounded champion an opportunity to conjure up a miracle. Unfortunately for RC, he had no mojo in a bag this night!

Lopez immediately pounced on his damaged foe and unloaded an extended barrage of thumping punches on the near totally response-less Commey. After granting him a generous amount of time to punch, hold or run, referee Fields jumped in when he did none of them.

Now, in his first title challenge, Teofimo Lopez is the new IBF world lightweight champion. In his post-fight interview, Lopez promptly called out WBO and WBA world lightweight champion Vasiliy “Hi-TeCH” Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO’s). Later in the broadcast, Lomachenko said that he would be open to facing Lopez in the future. Prior to this, he has shown very little interest in doing so.
