Yamileth Mercado to Defend WBC Title Against Mariana Juarez in October

Women’s boxing continues to make good moves as WBC super bantamweight champion Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado (19-3, 5KO) will put the title on the line against legendary two-division champion Mariana “La Barby” Juarez (55-11-4, 19KO). According to the WBC, a press conference was held by Zanfer and 2M promotions to announce the fight. The bout is taking place in the champion’s hometown of Chihuahua, Mexico on October 15.

Mercado has reigned over the division since defeating Fatuma Zarika in their rematch back in 2019. Despite having three successful title defenses, Yeimi took on a big opportunity by moving up to challenge the unified featherweight champion, Amanda Serrano, in 2021. She lost the fight but was hoping to land a fight with another legend in Jackie Nava after defeating Isis Vargas Perez in April.

Juarez is a household name among Mexican fans inside the boxing community. She has been a long-standing fixture in the sport. La Barby will be attempting to win a world title in a third division at the tail end of a twenty-plus-year career. She is looking to bounce back from a defeat against rival legend Jackie Nava in 2021. The two-division champion will have the advantage in knowledge and experience going into the fight. However, she will be coming off a long, one-year layoff on fight day.

Fans can expect an exciting fight as Yeimi will undoubtedly be extra excited and motivated fighting in front of the home crowd. Count on Juarez giving it her all as this could be her last championship opportunity before retirement.
