Fans Are Hopeful Munguia and Benavidez Get Canelo in 2024

Word on the street that the reigning super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) is ready to make public his agenda for 2024. Imagine if the king of 168 announces that he intends to fight Jaime Munguia and “The Mexican Monster” David Benavidez in Mexico (28-0, 24 KOs)?

The boxing community eagerly awaits the big announcement from Canelo on Azteca TV on Tuesday, February 13. Depending on which side of the narrative you stand on, it could mean bad news for Premier Boxing Champions and good news for DAZN. Should Alvarez fight Munguia and Benavidez, it would be great news for all of boxing.

GIVING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT?

Support for Benavidez (27-0, 23KO) to get a shot at Canelo has grown since his sixth-round stoppage over Demetrius Andrade in November 2023. The Mexican Monster is viewed by many as the biggest threat to Alvarez’s undisputed reign. There is a growing narrative among boxing fans that Alvarez is avoiding Benavidez. Fighting him would get the fans off his back about being scared of him.

Recently, Munguia (43-0, 34 KO) has been in the conversation of fighting the undisputed champion after impressively stopping John Ryder. In some boxing enthusiasts’ eyes, the undefeated Mexican is beginning to woo away a majority of Alvarez’s fan base. This fight would satisfy those fans who want to see it. Also, it has the potential to be a financial blockbuster in Mexico.

But Alvarez is stubborn and goes on his own accord. While currently in the middle of a three-fight deal with PBC, he fights who and whenever he wants.

The 33-year-old is in the enviable position that he doesn’t have to kowtow to anybody. However, it would be great for him to face Munguia in May and Benavidez in September of this year. Fans are cautiously optimistic that will be the case.
