Eimantas Stanionis vs Vergil Ortiz Postponed A Second Time
3kingsboxing.com has learned that the April 29 clash between WBA Regular champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs) and mandatory challenger Vergil Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19 KOs) has been postponed. Ortiz had to withdraw due to an undisclosed illness. According to ESPN, the fight could be rescheduled for this summer.
HERE WE GO AGAIN
Unfortunately, this is the second time this bout has been pushed back. Originally, Staniosis and Ortiz were to fight on March 18, but Stanionis had to pull out due to surgery for an emergency appendectomy in his home country of Lithuania. The WBA ordered the match in November 2022. Golden Boy won the purse bid to promote the fight in December of that year.
Stanionis won the WBA Regular welterweight strap with a split-decision win over Radzhab Butaev in April 2022. Ortiz’s last outing was a ninth-round stoppage over Michael McKinson in August 2022.
At this point, the hope is that the champion and mandatory challenger are both healthy simultaneously, so they can get in the ring and battle. Stanionis and Ortiz are aggressive, action-packed fighters. A matchup between the two would be a crowd-pleasing affair. The winner would be in line to face current unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. Stay tuned to 3KingsBoxing for updates on when Stanionis-Ortiz will at long last take place.
