Caleb Plant to Canelo: “Take care of Smith and Saunders, while I whoop on Benavidez!”
After his one-sided beatdown of mandatory challenger Vincent Feigenbutz, IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant was immediately confronted with questions about the possibility of facing WBA “regular” champion Canelo Alvarez in May.
PLANT’S MESSAGE FOR CANELO!
Canelo carries much weight when it comes to boxing. He’s the face of the sport and brings in the most money. Often when he comes knocking fighters listen and more than likely sign on the dotted line.
However, Plant isn’t one to be pushed around even if it means losing out on a possible big money fight against the Mexican superstar.
In the aftermath of his successful homecoming title defense the confident champion made it clear on where he stands as of now on facing Canelo in May.
“How far is May away? How far is May away though?
“So that means take half a month off after a three and a half week camp and go right back to work right? Just so they can try and get me when I’m overworked.
“So you can show the narrative then you can show the media. They make an offer knowing that I just fought so when we say no, it seems like I’m ducking them.
“You control the narrative you control the media. Don’t let them fool you! Like I said I’m a world champion, a world class fighter. I’m on my time CP time. That means Caleb Plant time.
“So they want me to take half a month off after a three and month camp and six week pre-camp. Like I said don’t be fooled. We gone get to him, he got fights left on his contract.
“Why doesn’t he go beat Billy Joe [Saunders] and Callum[Smith] and become unified. Then I whoop on David [Benavidez] and become unified. Then we can fight for all the marbles that sounds a little better to me.”
Plant is 100 percent right on the stance he’s taken against rushing back unprepared for a tough fight with Canelo. Obviously he’s taken notes as he like everyone else who witnessed Sergey Kovalev fight Canelo on a quick turn around just to get knocked out in the 11th round of their November 2019 fight.
The payday is good but not worth it when you know you won’t be giving yourself the best opportunity to be victorious when the opportunity comes.
