Taylor Successfully Defends Her Title

WBA lightweight women’s champion Katie Taylor (8-0) successfully defended her title against Chicago native Jessica McCaskill. In front of a standing room only crowd and these ladies didn’t disappoint. This was a fight where the challenger didn’t come to lay down and the champion had to display her skills.

McCaskill, who had hounded Taylor for this fight, didn’t seem fazed at all by the crowd or the moment. The 33-year-old old investment banker and two-time Golden Gloves winner showed a lot of grit and heart she was determined to make it an ugly fight. At one point she even had Taylor in trouble connecting on a BIG punch that wobbled Taylor for a minute. You could see Jessica wasn’t playing games but fell short of victory.

Taylor, the champion and former Olympic Gold medalist, started the fight showing her vast amateur pedigree. She was firing jabs and displayed good footwork, never giving her opponent a stationery target. However, she did have a few rough rounds where the referee had to take a point for excessive holding and Taylor even got rocked once, taking a few good punches.

As the fight went on you could see the difference in class Taylor started to separate herself from her opponent, and was able to get a UD onthejudges scorecards.

In the post fight interview Katie Taylor made it clear her plans and what she wants to do in 2018. She said she wants tounify the division, she wants to fight the other champions and prove she’s is the best. It was another good night for women’s boxing.
