Leo Santa Cruz wants Gary Russell Jr and Gervonta Davis on 2020!

WBA “Super” junior lightweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19ko) was victorious in his first attempt for a world title at junior lightweight in defeating Miguel Flores (24-2, 12ko) on November 23.

During the post-fight press conference, WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr, came up as a possible fight for 2020.

“Of course, I want the big fights. I want to be one of the best, I want to be on the pound for pound top 10.”

“I know that doing that I have to fight Gary Russell or Gervonta Davis and those are the fights I want in 2020.”

It is good to hear the WBA champion finally acknowledge wanting to fight his arch rival in Russell Jr. However, the problem is if that was truly the case, then why move up?

The WBC champion has been like a shark that smells blood in the water wanting to get a fight with Santa Cruz. This brings up another question. Would that fight take place at junior lightweight or featherweight?

The WBA champion would also add that there is no fear when fighting Russell.

“I want to prove myself. I want to show the world that I am not scared of nobody. They say that I am avoiding Gary Russell.”

“I think that Gervonta Davis is a tricky fighter. What other fighter can I go after and challenge to prove to the people that I am not scared of nobody.”

Let’s be clear. Yes, fighting WBA “regular” lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis is a huge fight. But, yet again, it’s someone that isn’t in the division. So how does this fight get made?

It seems like the more answers are provided, the more question arise. The bigger question is how much can we trust these words are genuine given his history of avoiding fights?

It is worth mentioning that looking at 2020, if the WBA champion is serious, then the boxing community should buckle up and be ready for a major announcement.
