Billy Joe Saunders enters his name into the “Canelo” sweepstakes!
Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions and promoter of former WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, recently commented on a potential clash with unified champion Canelo Alvarez.
“I don’t think he’s [Canelo] avoiding me, but there are plenty of people he can pick apart from Billy Joe Saunders”
Billy Joe Saunders – Middleweight Contender
“Who wants to fight a southpaw who’s hard to hit?”
Frank Warren – Queensberry Promotions
From a match-up perspective, this is an attractive fight. First, there’s a natural rivalry between these two fighters; especially with the Brit’s comments regarding the Mexican superstar failing a drug test, then failing a drug test of his own.
Second, it’s a stylistic test for the unified champion because many boxing fans remember his struggles with Erislandy Lara, who also has a slick southpaw style.
Last, it’s a can’t-miss financially!
Both fighters have strong fan bases, and Billy Joe Saunders’ bombastic personality will make for an excellent promotion.
If Golden Boy Promotions is looking for a lucrative September fight, this definitely should be in competition with a potential Callum Smith or Demetrius Andrade bout that are both also under consideration.
It’ll be interesting to see how Oscar De La Hoya responds to this call out.
