Claressa Shields’ UK Debut Fight is Rescheduled Again

Two-divisional undisputed champion Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (11-0, 2ko) was all set to face Ema “The Princess” Kozin (21-0-1, 11ko) on December 11, 2021. However, the fight would later change to a January 29 fight date. This follows recent news of the BBBofC canceling all boxing events in the first month of 2022.

Yes, it seems the COVID-19 variant Omicron is already affecting the sport of boxing similar to 2020. The decision by the BBBofC to suspend boxing events for January has put Shields’ debut fight in the United Kingdom on hold for a second time.

It is a painful blow for the UK fans. They were eager to see the American rival of WBO middleweight champion Savannah “The Silent Assassin” Marshall in action. Shields made big news after landing a seven-figure deal with Sky Sports, and the fight against Kozin was the appetizer before the main course: a showdown with Marshall.

THIS WAS INEVITABLE

When Queensberry promotions head honcho Frank Warren halted all fights until March, the writing was on the wall. Moreover, this explains why both, DAZN and Sky Sports, have no boxing events scheduled at the moment.

The BBBofC made an official announcement on social media and hinted at a review that could affect fights planned for February, also.

“Following advice from the British Boxing Board of Control Medical Panel, boxing tournaments under the jurisdiction of the BBBofC will be suspended for January.

A further review by the Medical Panel and Stewards will take place prior to the planned recommencement of Boxing in February.”

Robert W. Smith, BBBofC General Secretary

The latter statement by the BBBofC is extremely important as it puts Shields’s rescheduled fight in jeopardy. She took to social media, making the fans aware of the new fight date.

Claressa Shields informs fans her title fight is now scheduled for February 5
