Stephen Espinoza Projects Crawford vs Spence Rematch into 2024
Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza has revealed that the highly-anticipated rematch between undisputed welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31KO) and Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (28-1, 22KO) will not be taking place this year.
On July 29, the boxing world witnessed Bud dominate then-unified champion Spence en route to becoming a two-divisional undisputed champion. Shortly afterward, he claimed the rematch would take place in December.
While speaking with Fight Hub TV, Espinoza disclosed that this year is no longer a viable option. He stated that the new timeframe is 2024.
“We still have some details to work out. It’s not going to happen this year at this point . . . We’re getting to mid-October, so pulling off a December pay-per-view where you don’t have it in place by mid-October is a challenge. Conversations will continue, and we will probably look at 2024.”
One possible reason for the rematch’s delay could be the weight class. Crawford claims the fight will take place at the welterweight limit unless he’s notified that The Truth can’t make the weight anymore.
Several boxing enthusiasts have accused Crawford of double talk. In the post-fight press conference, he was okay with the rematch being at junior middleweight.
