Gervonta Davis Not Retiring is a Missed Opportunity

The boxing world was buzzing with rumors that WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis had retired. It was later revealed that the rumors were false. However, the boxing world would be better without Tank.

We grilled undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for years for ducking fighters. Yet, Tank has taken it to a whole other level, bouncing between weight divisions and fighting the weakest belt-holders. He fought Ryan Garcia due to his popularity, which brought more eyes to the fight.

His fans eat it up, defending the WBA champion at every turn. It is the main reason why he continues to avoid facing WBC champion Shakur Stevenson. If he and Canelo left, then the sport would have to hit the reset button. Every fighter would take tough match-ups, trying to be the face of boxing.

Unified super flyweight Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez could be the next face of boxing within the next 2-4 years. I also think this may reopen the doors for the Super 6 tournament, or something similar to it, to help catapult boxing back to being more globally relevant.
