Taylor Admits Persoon Bout Was a Draw; Immediate Rematch Not Likely

Katie Taylor Don’t Want Smoke with Delfine Persoon Again...At Least Not Now

Katie Taylor admits her bout with Delfine Persoon should have been a draw.

3kingsboxing has recently learned undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor (14-0, 6 KO’s) has no intention of supplying Delfine Persoon (43-2, 18 KO’s) an immediate rematch.

At least, by the sound of it, she will not be fighting her next.

Taylor gained a dubious majority decision victory over Persoon on June 1, on the Joshua v Ruiz under-card. Many were highly critical of the decision. Whether agreeable with the fans or not, Taylor now holds the IBF, WBO, WBA, and WBC lightweight titles.

Her promoter, Eddie Hearn, was quick to say he was confident that the Irish superstar would grant a swift rematch. It seems that the 2012 gold medalist is not so eager to hop back in the ring with Persoon.

“I’m very happy to give her a rematch whenever she wants it really. I don’t think it’s gonna happen in the next fight, but the rematch is gonna be inevitable.

“The rematch is going to be even more exciting and bigger than last week’s fight, but yeah. The controversy is ridiculous really and some of the scorecards.”

“It was a very, very close fight and you can’t call a close fight a robbery really. So I’m not really too sure what all the controversy is about it.

“I think when people actually go back and watch the fight, they see at most it was a draw. That’s how close the fight was.”

Katie Taylor – Undisputed Female Lightweight Champion

In a recent interview with Talksport.com, Taylor said she felt she was the deserving winner and that a rematch was “inevitable”. Yet, outside of that vague reference, Taylor made no mention or even hint at when a rematch would happen.

It’s ironic that the prizefight that crowned her undisputed is her most disputed bout to date. Taylor herself acknowledges the fight was close and could have been even.

If ever there were a situation that warranted a rematch, this would be the one! In fact, Taylor was granted a “majority decision” because even one of the official judges ruled the fight draw.

We’ll just have to wait and see what Taylor decides to do next. Yet, seeing as how exciting the bout was and all the controversy surrounding the outcome, it’d be good if Persoon were high on her list of priorities.

Let’s hope a Taylor v Persoon 2 announcement arrives without too much waiting. Although, there is the prospect of a fight with seven division champion Amanda Serrano hanging in the balance as well…
