Charles Conwell Petitions The WBC To Fight Interim Champion Brian Mendoza

There continues to be movement going on in the junior middleweight division as the team of Charles Conwell (18-0, 13KO) is looking to fight the WBC Interim champion Brian “La Bala” Mendoza (22-2, 16KO).

According to ESPN, Conwell’s manager, Mark Habibi, has petitioned the WBC to order the fight with La Bala. Moreover, the Ohioan is ranked number two by the WBC along with a spot at number four with the WBO, IBF, and number fourteen with the WBA.

There is a good chance this fight could happen, as number one contender Liam Smith heading into an upcoming rematch with Chris Eubank Jr. Also, undisputed champion Jermell Charlo is out, healing up from a hand injury. Furthermore, he still must deal with WBO mandatory challenger Tim Tszyu.

BOTH FIGHTERS HAVE SKILLS

Mendoza is coming off a sensational meme-style knockout victory over Sebastian Fundora on April 8. The New Mexico native is on a three-fight win streak and seems to have found a groove with renowned trainer Ismael Salas. In addition, his footwork, counterpunching, and overall boxing ability have peaked at the right time.

Conwell had a tough fight against veteran Juan Carlos Abreu in November 2022. He narrowly escaped with a majority decision as the young fighter had to overcome early adversity in a heavily tested contest. The young fighter has shown he can box behind the jab and has a high work-rate.

This is a good matchup considering both guys possess the ability to turn a fight in their favor with one punch. It’s good that fighters are looking to make moves instead of waiting on the sidelines for the undisputed champion to return. The junior middleweight division is deep with young talent and mouth-watering matchups.
