Conor Benn Sinks into Deeper Controversy Over Clomiphene Scandal

Instead of dueling his latest contracted opponent, welterweight boxer Conor “The Destroyer” Benn (21-0, 14 KO’s) was flagged for the banned substance Clomiphene and had his fight canceled . Now, even worse for Benn, he is facing more scrutiny since it has been revealed that he failed a drug test earlier in the year for the same illegal substance. This late development was reported by The Daily Mail. On the subject, Frank Warren of Queensbury Promotions had this to offer:

“A few of us have known about this earlier test for some time. That makes it even more of a scandal. More damaging to our sport than everyone thought.”

Had everything gone according to plan, Benn would have met the challenge of middleweight fighter Chris Eubank Jr (32-2, 23 KO’s). The highly anticipated match would have been a direct extension to their fighting fathers, Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn, who shared a historic UK rivalry. Instead, The Destroyer has been flung into a professional limbo where he faces a potential four-year ban at the hands of the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC). It was the same BBBofC who refused to sanction the bout after learning of the failed test despite both teams wanting to move forward.

THE UNKNOWN FUTURE

When news of the fight-squelching scandal first went viral, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing insisted that Team Benn was waiting on the B-sample to be tested so that The Destroyer could be vindicated. That test has yet to be run. Many are taking this as more evidence of wrongdoing.

The B-sample can only be analyzed when the flagged fighter requests for it to be done. The fact that it seemingly has not been requested is casting a bigger shadow of doubt on Benn’s innocence in the matter. Without doubt, the situation is getting bleaker and bleaker for the rising star. Yet, no matter what turns out to be the ultimate fate of Conor Benn, 3Kings Boxing will be on the scene to report all the news!
