Andy Cruz Stops Abraham Montoya in 3; Jumps to Junior Lightweight Division
In his latest tour of duty, gold medal Olympian Andy “Diamante” Cruz (7-1, 4 KO’s) slid back into the win column following his January 24 unanimous decision loss at the hands of Raymond Muratalla. He managed to change his fortune by defeating Abraham “Fily” Montoya (24-8-1, 14 KO’s) by way of third round technical knockout.
While preparing for this scrap with Montoya, Cruz was frequently peppered with questions revolving around the weight division he sought to campaign in. To date he has set his flag in the lightweight division. Yet per his post-fight interview, it appears Cruz will take the show on the road.
“I was asked this earlier in the week, but I said my focus isn’t that, my focus is on tonight. But hey, the fight is over! 130, watch out! I am ready for more challenges. It’s showtime!”
Given his recent loss and impending switch in divisions, it will be interesting to see who Team Cruz shoots to pen a bout with next. On the one hand, Cruz will still be able to utilize his recognizable name value and visible perch in the sport. Cruz was originally slated to do battle with Albert Bell in an IBF title eliminator, but this duel was canned when Bell opted to instead challenge WBO 135-pound champion Abdullah Mason for his title. Now, we will have to see what kind of traction Team Cruz can get going in the junior lightweight division.
