David Benavidez Issues Public Apology for Being Visibly Drunk

Two-time WBC super middleweight champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (28-0, 24KO) issued an apology to boxing fans for being drunk during a recent interview on DAZN. In addition, boxing pundits and fans are questioning if he has fallen back into the same traps that cost him the title on two occasions.

During a quick intermission for Richardson Hitchins versus Gustavo Lemos, a DAZN commentator spoke with Benavidez. It became apparent that he was heavily intoxicated, slurring his words and struggling to answer the questions.

The Mexican Monster set to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk at light heavyweight, took to social media apologizing to the boxing public for being drunk.

NOT LIVING THE FIGHTER’S LIFESTYLE

Immediately, fans began to question the seriousness of Benavidez, who has a track record of not staying focused. In 2018, he tested positive for cocaine, resulting in him losing the title. It became the main attack of rival Caleb Plant during the build-up for their fight in 2023.

In 2020, the two-time champion lost the title on the scale after missing weight by 2.8 lbs. Many boxing pundits mark it as the moment that opened the door for undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s run.

Benavidez can’t afford to fall back into old habits and forgo living the fighter’s lifestyle. Canelo’s fans have attacked him for less, so undoubtedly they will come out in droves over this. Yet, they will be within their rights to do so, considering his actions gave them the ammunition.

Hopefully, this was just a blip and The Mexican Monster will stay away from anything that can derail his momentum.
