David Benavidez Frustrated with David Morrell Avoiding a Fight
It’s a very frustrating time for two-time WBC 168-pound champion David “Red Flag” Benavidez (26-0, 23KOs). The unbeaten former champion is looking for a big name to fight, as he’s been calling out WBC 160-pound champ Jermall Charlo, former IBF 168-pound champion Caleb Plant, and undisputed 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez. Unfortunately for him, none of those guys have shown any real interest in locking horns with him.
After picking up his 26th career victory after his brutal stoppage over former IBF 160-pound champion David Lemieux in May, Red Flag just wants an opportunity to prove himself against the upper echelon fighters in his division. Now, he’s turned his attention to David Morrell (7-0, 6KOs), the WBA Regular 168-pound champion who had previously called him out. While interviewing with fighthype.com, the former champion says he wants the Cuban boxer to back-up his trash talk.
“David Morrell was talking all that shit, now he doesn’t want to fight. We let it be known that we wanted to fight him. He was saying that he was going to take the fight next, but now it’s Ronnie Shields saying that he doesn’t want to rush into a fight with me. You know what I mean? So I don’t know, I’m getting very frustrated. “
The frustration is understandable as every fighter not named Canelo Alvarez is available to fight Benavidez. Obviously, politics plays a part in fights happening and not happening. However, with most of boxing’s top super middleweights aligned with PBC, it shouldn’t be hard to get Benavidez a big fight. But with his skills, power, and size, the money will have to match the risk.
