Jason Sosa was no match for Miguel Berchelt!
WBC world super featherweight champion Miguel “El Alacran” Berchelt (37-1, 33 KO’s) successfully defended his belt in extremely brutal fashion. In this sixth title defense, Berchelt was able to thwart Jason “El Canto” Sosa (23-4-4, 16 KO’s) with a river of thudding heat shots and a withering body attack.
THE BREAKDOWN
In the outdoor venue at Dignity Health Sports Park, Jason Sosa came out strong. El Canto opened the bout using his feet well, darting in and out while landing a good amount of punches. Berchelt landed a few thudding shots to the body and head, but he was still warming up a bit.
With the second round, there was a sharp turn in action and momentum. Once again, Sosa began the round in solid fashion pushing Berchelt back behind a stiff jab. After one sequence of back peddling however, El Alacran attacks with a series of about three or four repeated hooks. The rapid-fire punches managed to put Jason Sosa on the canvas. Although, Sosa finds his feet very quickly.
When El Canto was ready to fight again, he gave the impression that he was not badly hurt. In fact, it could be argued that he was off balance when he went down. Whether he was hurt or not, Berchelt rapidly put a legitimate hurting on him. For the remainder of the period, Berchelt beat on Sosa with savage, and very effective, aggression. Under this heavy fire, the prizefight seemed very close to being stopped.
To his credit, Sosa began the third round very well. He almost gave the impression that he had shook off the trauma of the previous round. However, around the half-way point in the period, Berchelt once again started landing those atomic body shots. The ferocious Mexican ended the round with a grimace-inducing two-handed attack that saw him land about four straight body shots that were punctuated by two hooks to the head.
The end came ghoulishly in the fourth round. Here, Berchelt lands extended combinations almost at will from the opening of the period. Hitting on all cylinders by this point, virtually everything that the WBC champ threw was landing with a sickening thud. Berchelt was able to quickly hammer Sosa to one knee. When El Canto barely beat the count, raising up at the count of 9, the writing was all over the wall.
Sosa would attempt to soldier on. However, when the action resumed, so too did Berchelt’s merciless assault. With their fighter being torn apart in front of their eyes, Sosa’s corner threw in the towel. With the solid win under his belt, perhaps Berchelt will now focus his attention on unifying with one of the other champions in the division.
