Billy Joe Saunders Talks On a 2023 Return

When the world last saw super middleweight boxer and two-division champion “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (30-1, 14 KO’s), he was dancing with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Sadly for Saunders, rather than scripting a Hollywood ending, the redheaded boxing cashcow stopped him in the eighth. To add insult to injury, not only was it his first defeat, Saunders had his face broken in the process. With that grueling match officially two-years in his rearview mirror, Superb is ready to come back, as he explained to iFL TV.

“I’ve been in the game since I was five years old and sometimes you just need a break and a recharge. But boxing has done me very good in life . . . from day one, I never ever thought about packing it in. I never thought about saying ‘I’m done, I’m retired’. But in this sport, there comes a lot of bullshit that comes with it and sometimes just the stress to get away from all that rubbish recharges you. When I look back at it, I’ve had a good career but there are still some big fights out there. So, it’d be a shame just to walk away.”

BACK TO THE GRIND?

Given that he has been out of the ring for so long, as would be expected, Saunders, 33, would not try to set the world on fire straight away.

“Listen, I am not Superman, and to do this fight game, you got to do it right and it’d only be right if I had someone that is not a punching bag but someone I’m expected to win, but see what’s left. And I think it would be a big, big fight, whoever I fight, to be honest with you. I’m not looking for someone who’s had 50 losses or something like that. It’d be a good name but to start mixing it with all these active fighters, I need to get active again.”

It’s been no secret that the southpaw Saunders has been back in training for some time. It will be interesting to see if Superb actually does pen a match and slide back into the squared-circle. With his name’s value, provided he has retained a good measure of his old form, there are big fights for him to make. So, for the time being, we will just have to sit back and see what is next for Billy Joe Saunders.
