Caleb Plant has supreme faith in Canelo fight happening

At the tail end of 2020, Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo’ Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KO’s) began his invasion of the super middleweight division. Among those that he first contacted was IBF world super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (20-0, 12 KO’s). While he did want the fight, Plant would eventually turn Alvarez away. Instead, Canelo fought and beat Callum “Mundo” Smith (27-1, 19 KO’s) on December 19, 2020.

With the victory, Alvarez claimed Smith’s WBA super and the vacant WBC world super middleweight titles. Naturally, he is happy with his new titles but the goal was to become undisputed. Knowing that Canelo wants all the belts, Sweethands is firm in his belief he will face the redhead soon. In the end though, some still wonder why he let the initial chance to face Alvarez slip through his fingers. Thankfully, the Tennessee native recently took the time to explain the matter in greater detail to Fight Hub TV.

“It’s a fight that I wanted and a fight that I raised my hand for and I am a fighter. That is what I want to do. But my manager, Luis DeCubas, he just felt like with that being five weeks away, which is about four weeks of training, he felt like for a fight of that magnitude, he didn’t want to pull the trigger on it.

I respect Luis for that because he is the best at what he does and that would have been a fight he would have made a big pay day on too. But he was looking past that and looking for what’s in my best interest. I’m a fighter, I want to fight, that’s what I love to do so. But that is why I have a great team around me and they said lets slow down, you know this is a fight that is going to get made.”

PATIENCE IS KEY

In the end though, Plant is not just banking on fuzzy feelings in his heart. Granted he beats his upcoming mandatory challenger, “Golden” Caleb Truax (31-4-2, 19 KO’s), he likes the ongoing talks between the two teams.

“Let’s have a little faith! I’ve done everything I said I was going to do before, his team is telling you, my team is telling you. And again, it’s not just the fighters telling you, it’s the teams around them telling you as well. So this fight will happen. He is looking to become undisputed. I am looking, and I’m going to become undisputed and there is only one way for that to happen and that’s us getting in the ring to fight.”

Yet, while the road ahead is potentially bright, first Plant must defeat Truax and emerge unscathed. So let us just wait and see what happens on January 30 before dreaming up any unification bouts!
