Canelo Alvarez v Caleb Plant now unlikely; Saunders, Smith and Ryder possible!
After securing his release from Golden Boy Promotions, it appeared that Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) was headed to a December 19 clash with IBF super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (20-0, 12KOs). However, that fight appears all but dead.
According to Mike Coppinger, the fight will not proceed due to the timing of putting a fight of this significance together. When it comes to Alvarez, he is a bonafide superstar. This means his fights will be aired on PPV. With December 19 right around the corner, there is a major time crunch that would require major promotion.
Alvarez, who is looking to return before the year is up, will look to other possible opponents. Those names include WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14KOs). They were supposed to fight in May before the pandemic halted that fight. Another possible opponent is WBA super middleweight super champion Callum Smith (27-0, 19KOs). He has also been linked with Canelo in the past.
Regardless of who he chooses, it will be on his terms more so than ever now that he is a free agent.
UPDATE
It is now being reported that Eddie Hearn has made a formal offer to Eddy Reynoso, who manages Canelo, for a possible fight with either WBA super middleweight super champion Callum Smith or John Ryder (28-5, 16KOs). The fight would take place in December on DAZN.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as once an opponent is finalized.
