Crawford Criticizes Mayweather for Keeping Game to Himself!

When it comes to modern day boxers, one of the greatest evolutions has come in the form of their business acumen. Recently, undisputed welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) was accused of holding up his mega-fight with Errol Spence Jr. Until he was informed about all the finer details about the money involved, and guaranteed a certain amount of the pie, the fierce Nebraskan would not move forward. As he continues his career and involvement in the sport, Bud would love to gift up-and-coming boxers with the financial gems he’s gained. This is something that he believes that boxing titans, such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, didn’t do.

While appearing as a guest on Boardroom, Crawford gave a more detailed account on how he felt about the behind-the-scenes dealings of the sport.

“They [young fighters] don’t know. They sign that contract and they let they promotional company handle that and they manager handle that. I was a victim of that. What I know now I never knew coming back up because I wasn’t able to see anything.”

“I wasn’t able to question anything because I signed a contract stating that these are my guarantees, these are my numbers. I wasn’t able to say, ‘ok, well what’s coming in? How much are you getting for sponsorships? How much are you giving me for the event budget,’ and stuff like that. I wasn’t able to ask those types of questions.”

“But you know, Floyd [Mayweather Jr], he broke the bank, and I don’t see him trying to give the game to the young fighters because he is a promoter now! So, I can’t give everybody the game if I am one of them now, it’s a business, at the end of the day. So, if they made all this money on our backs and now, I am a promoter, I am going to do the same thing that they once were doing and just say it’s the game of the business.”

There is little to no doubt that the modern boxer will only continue to seek greater understanding and control of their contracts and the monies available to them. It will also be interesting to see what “Money” Mayweather has to say in rebuttal to Bud’s lowkey finger-pointing.

Mayweather has always been partial to the limelight and given the present spotlight on Crawford, it’s hard to believe that Money will not have a little something to say in response. Whether he does or doesn’t though, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report any verbal scuttlebutt.
