David Benavidez Says Reports of a Fight Agreement With David Morrell Are False
Two-time WBC super middleweight champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (27-0, 23KO) shot down claims that an agreement has been reached with WBA Regular champion David Morrell (9-0, 8KO) to fight in the fall.
After undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez turned down $50 million to fight The Mexican Monster, Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, informed 3kingsboxing.com they will be attempting to make another big fight.
Social media was buzzing over reports that the two stablemates have agreed to fight on Pay-Per-View in October or November. However, Benavidez took to social media claiming the news is false.
On March 27, Lewkowicz told 3kingsboxing.com that a contract did exist for a fight featuring Benavidez and Morrell. However, an agreement to fight is very different from negotiating venue, purse split, dates, and rematch clauses. A perfect example is WBC champion Tyson Fury and unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. After learning both champions had signed to fight for undisputed, the boxing world saw the collapse of their negotiations in real time all over social media.
Benavidez’s statement does not mean the fight will not happen. It simply means that nothing has been finalized at the moment.
