David Morrell Fights Late-Replacement Foe Yamaguchi Falcao on April 22
A change of opponent on short notice is nothing new in boxing. It’s the current case for WBA Regular super middleweight champion David Morrell (8-0, 7 KOs) in his upcoming fight on April 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. After original opponent Sena Agbeko was pulled due to licensing issues with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Morrell will now face Brazilian Yamaguchi Falcao (24-1-1, 10 KOs).
A BATTLE OF SOUTHPAWS
Morrell is thought of by observers as one of the top fighters in the division. The 25-year-old southpaw from Cuba has quickly risen up the professional ranks. In only his third bout in the pro ranks, Morrell captured the WBA Interim title with a unanimous decision victory in Lennox Allen in August 2020. Morrell was later elevated to Regular champion in January 2021.
Morrell is improving with each fight. In his last outing, the talented lefty scored a twelfth-round stoppage over mandatory challenger Aidos Yerbossynuly in November 2022.
Next up for Morrell will be Falcao who has a gaudy amateur pedigree which includes a Silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Games and a Bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics at light heavyweight. The 35-year-old late-replacement heads into the upcoming contest riding an eight-fight winning streak. Based on his fight resume and sheer talent, the Brazilian looks to be a better fighter and tougher opponent for Morrell than Agbeko would have been.
However, that will not matter to Morrell who is focused and wants to make a statement. He is in line for a possible showdown with the unbeaten and two-time WBC 168-pound champion David Benavidez later this year. So, Morrell cannot afford to have a lapse in concentration. While accepting this fight on late notice, Falcao views this as the opportunity of a lifetime. Morrell – Falcao is the co-main event for Gervonta Davis – Ryan Garcia and will air live on SHOWTIME pay-per-view.
