Joseph Diaz has Isaac Cruz in the Crosshairs

Former title contender Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (22-2-1, 15 KO’s) is becoming very popular after going twelve hard rounds with three-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis back in December 2021. He is being targeted by yet another former WBC interim champion, Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz (32-2-1, 15 KO’s).

THE FIGHT THAT GAINED THE BOXING WORLD’S ATTENTION

Pitbull earned his bones by living up to his moniker in the ring against Davis, who was defending the WBA Regular lightweight title. The Mexican fighter was relentless in applying the pressure, coming forward and landing good power shots. This attack turned Davis from his usual aggressive style into more of a boxer looking to land counterpunches.

When the final bell sounded, Davis got the win. But, it was Cruz’s performance that earned the respect of fans inside the boxing community. Pitbull was a late replacement after Rolando Romero got shown the exit door. Bearing this in mind, several fans believe that Cruz would have done better with a full training camp.

This prompted former WBC Interim titlist Ryan “King Ry” Garcia to seek a return fight with Cruz. Garcia also has a hidden motive; if he puts Cruz away soundly, preferably by knockout, then he would use that to bait Tank back into fighting him.

DIAZ WANTS TO FIGHT

Well, now it seems another Golden Boy Promotions lightweight interim titlist wants to trade leather with the tough-as-nails Mexican native.

Jo Jo is coming off a loss after failing to become a two-divisional champion against WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney back in 2021. Diaz is ranked #7 by the WBC, while Cruz is ranked #3 and #11 by the WBC and IBF, respectively.

The former interim titlist wants to remain relevant in the division and perhaps even get another crack at the title.A t the very least, Diaz wants to remain in the conversation. A victory over Cruz would boost him high into the rankings after such a drop-off.

As for Cruz, it will be interesting to see which path he chooses. He is in the driver’s seat controlling his own destiny.
