Sunny Edwards Looking Towards Julio Cesar Martinez or Artem Dalakian Next

In the aftermath of suffering a broken jaw, WBO flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11KO) most likely won’t fight IBF champion “Showtime” Sunny Edwards (18-0, 4KO) in a unification. Matchroom Boxing Promoter Eddie Hearn says the focus will be to make Edwards versus WBC champion Julio Cesar Martinez or WBA champion Artem Dalakian.

On April 3, Edwards was happy to announce that unification with Bam was possible next, if the former WBC super flyweight champion was successful in capturing the vacant WBO title.

On April 9, Bam became a two-divisional champion after capturing the WBO title against Cristian Gonzalez. During the post-fight interview, he revealed that he suffered a broken jaw. But he still called out Showtime for their unification bout targeted for the summer.

EDDIE HEARN STILL WANTS TO MAKE A UNIFICATION

During an interview with iD Boxing, Hearn was very open about Rodriguez’s injury changing their plans. However, he went into deep details about unification with Martinez (19-2, 14KO) or Dalakian (22-0, 15KO) as possible next.

“I think that’s what we have to focus on now. Julio Cesar Martinez has got a fairly routine title defense on May 6. We want Sunny to fight in July. If we can’t get unification, we give him a voluntary defense. But I don’t want a voluntary defense, I want the unification.

If Jesse has to wait til September or October . . . he can fight the winner of Martinez against Sunny. Sunny can fight Dalakian. I don’t really care, but I really want to make those unifications and that will be the plan still.”

If given a choice of which champion to fight next, Edwards would absolutely pick Martinez. He was calling out the WBC champion long before Rodriguez came into the picture. Moreover, Hearn was keen on making the fight back in 2022.
