Stephen Fulton and Brandon Figueroa Headed for Collision
It would appear that interim WBA world super bantamweight champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa (20-0, 15 KO’s) is on a collision course with IBO world super bantamweight champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton (17-0, 8 KO’s). Fulton is ranked #13 by the WBA and both fighters are housed under the Premier Boxing Champions banner.
Following his August 24, fourth-round stoppage of Javier Nicolas Chacon, Figueroa found himself in an in-ring confrontation with Fulton. When each were questioned in turn, both boxers expressed their interest and willingness to fight each other.
As would be expected, Cool Boy Steph and the Heartbreaker individually think that they have the tools to topple the other. Fulton’s confidence is rooted in his skillset. On the other hand, Figueroa believes that his power would stop Cool Boy Steph in his tracks.
The native Texan Figueroa just successfully defended his interim WBA title for the first time. Also, he has stopped his last seven consecutive opponents. Fulton has stopped three of his last five opponents and collected the scalps of six undefeated fighters. It’s a little wonder why the professional bruisers are teeming with self-assurance.
THE CHAMPIONS’ WEIGH-IN
In an interview conducted by Champside, Stephen Fulton gave a more in-depth account of his feelings about a potential prizefight with the interim champion.
“As far as Figueroa, he’s not ready for me, he’s still young. They should have took a different route […] everybody that they’ve put in front of me, I believe can handle Brandon Figueroa. Who has he fought? […] We don’t know nobody Brandon fought, nobody! He’s never been tested, he’s never been in there with a person like me before.”
Both are PBC fighters and ranked by the same sanctioning body. Adding that both have expressed mutual interest in a showdown, the bout should be easy to make. Although, much stranger things have happened in boxing. In any event, 3kingsboxing will be sure to provide all the late breaking news.
