Alexander Povetkin takes a decision over Hughie Fury!
Father and trainer of heavyweight contender Hughie Fury, Peter once stated that he has no doubt that his son will be a champion! If you look at the last six fights without considering the loses, it would look as if he would be well on his way.
The cousin of former unified champion and top heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, Hughie seems to not be able to “get over the hump.” He is good enough to beat journeymaen such as Fred Kassi and Dominick Guinn. Actually, he has a win over a former champion in a VERY aged Samuel Peter.
However, when it comes to the top-level contenders/former champions, he cannot muster up enough skill to get the nod. Out of his last six fights, all three of his loses came against former champions Joseph Parker, Alexander Povetkin and IBF #1 contender Kubrat Pulev.
Can’t Get Over the Hump
While he was completely outclassed against Pulev in 2018, some believe he should have won against Parker in 2017. He would drop a majority decision on conflicting scorecards in his hometown. Two judges saw him get dominated while the third saw a draw.
The story of that fight was how much Fury seemed to slow down late. In his fight against Povetkin, the same would be manifested.
Fury started out fast, displaying the ability to find his range behind a jab while exhibiting good defense by staying away from the Russian’s huge left hook. He had Povetkin chasing him so much that the 39 year-old had his mouth open by the third round.
Then as he suffered a cut in the same place he received one against Pulev, things started to slow to a crawl. The once “jabbing from a distance” Fury stopped moving and became a stagnant fighter.
This allowed Povetkin to get closer to his opponent and produce enough volume to bank the majority of the rounds.
The same would happen as we have seen in his previous fights. Fury would take his foot off the gas, then lose by decision.
It’s hard to say where he goes from here. It would be safe to say he probably should stay at the domestic level.
However, there is fighter by the name of David Price who many wrote off and was on the verge of retirement before he got a big win against David Allen. Now he is right back into contendership.
Maybe the same can happen for Fury so fans don’t lose faith in him. We will have to see!
