Ryan Garcia Puts Away Conor Benn; Wants Teofimo Lopez Next
In his latest at bat, WBC welterweight champion “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (26-2, 21 KO’s) staged a successful first defense of his title. He pulled this off by stopping UK import Conor “The Destroyer” Benn (25-2, 14 KO’s) by way of second round TKO. The quick outcome was not very surprising to most due to Benn entering the bout seemingly extremely weight drained. Even before the clang of the opening bell, Benn let it be known he was immediately jumping up to middleweight.
Naturally, Garcia was delighted with his win. He wasted little time before calling out WBA welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (23-2, 13 KO’s). Lopez is himself coming off a dominant victory over Rolando Romero this past August 22. With that win, The Takeover collected the belt and bounced back in the win column following his January 31 unanimous decision loss to WBO junior welterweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
For some reason, when Garcia called Lopez into the ring, the onsite security handily prevented him from entering the ring. The same occurrence almost happened when David Benavidez attempted to meet Jai Opetaia in the ring in the preceding bout.
There is little doubt that Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez will have plenty to say in the next few days. It’s clear that no one is signing up to square off with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney any time soon. So, let’s hope that King Ry and The Takeover can get a contract signed.
