Lopez Looking To Takeover The Welterweight Division
Newly crowned 147-pound champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (23-2, 13 KO’s) defeated Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-3, 13 KO’s) by majority decision. During the post-fight interview, he talked about becoming undisputed. However, he will have to wait for the movements of WBC champion “King” Ryan Garcia, IBF champion Liam Paro, and WBO champion Devin “The Dream” Haney to conclude first.
In an uneventful fight with Romero, Lopez did whatever he wanted. Despite getting hurt and suffering a cut, he controlled the majority of the fight. This victory is especially satisfying given he is rebounding from a sound drubbing at the hands of WBO junior welterweight Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KO’s). Lopez didn’t call out any names and expressed wanting to take a break. But looking at the landscape, going for undisputed won’t be as easy as it sounds.
UNDISPUTED WILL HAVE TO WAIT
Haney (33-0, 15KO) is reportedly in heavy negotiations with Paro (28-1, 16KO). So, we’ll all have to loiter around a bit to see how those talks conclude. Although it’ll be interesting to see how Lopez deals with Haney going forward in general. To date, Team Lopez has kept a healthy distance away from The Dream. Let’s see if the added weight will strengthen his overall resolve to pen that bout in the new division.
Lastly, the ever-controversial Garcia (25-2, 20KO) is slated to test his might against Conor “The Destroyer” Benn on September 12. Therefore, we all have to see how that collision turns out before any realistic plans can be scripted for a fight. With that being said, top contenders and former world champions, Richardson Hitchins and Brian Norman Jr. are ready for action. With these seemingly favorable choices, it’ll be interesting to see what comes of all of these would-be options.
