Jesse Vargas Looks Good After Layoff In UD Win

Vargas Rebounds From Pacquiao Loss With UD

In the main event of PBC On FS1 Jesse Vargas returned to the ring for the first time since his loss to Manny Pacquiao in November 2015. He took on Aaron Herrera (33-7-1,22 KO’s) in a 10 round welterweight bout, his first bout under Al Haymon and the Premier Boxing Champions banner.

First round started out slow with both men feeling each other out. It was Vargas landing the more significant shots in the round. Vargas was able to stay composed while landing his jab early and looked good in the first two rounds.

In the third Herrera kept coming forward but Vargas remained disciplined working his jab and picking and choosing when to land his shots.By the fourth it was apparent the Vargas was the more fundamentally sound fighter using his movement and jab to control the pace of the fight.

By the fifth round Vargas was just hitting Herrera with a basic one, two at will. The sixth stanza saw Vargas land a beautiful left hook to the head that dropped Herrera. Vargas was in complete control and Herrera seemed frustrated from not being able to get on the inside. In the seventh and eighth it was more of the same with Vargas boxing beautifully. Inthe final round the former champion came forward punishing Herrera with shots.

The theme of the night was Vargas’ jab and movement. The former champ picked upalopsidedunanimousdecisionvictory. We will see whatthe future holds for him but he looked outstandingtonightcoming off a long layoff as he hopes to get back into contention.
