Alex Krassyuk Dedicated to Making Usyk vs Fury Undisputed Bout
Technically speaking, we could have had an undisputed heavyweight champion by the end of the year. Regrettably, WBC heavyweight champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (33-0-1, 24 KO’s) has opted to face MMA star Francis Ngannou rather than fight unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KO’s). Remaining unperturbed, Usyk promoter Alex Krassyuk is confident the Fury fight will still happen.
Teams Usyk and Fury attempted to negotiate a fight but ultimately the two platoons could not get on the same page. On the outside looking in, it appeared that Usyk and his squad were the more interested party. In a recent interview with BBC Sport, Krassyuk gave a better insight to his overall thoughts on these matters.
“It’s our obligation to deliver this fight. The whole world wants to see this fight. Not just ourselves or people involved in boxing, but the whole world. People who know nothing about boxing would love to see the heavyweight undisputed fight for the four belts for the first time in the four-belt era. I can promise you and promise all the fans around the world that I will do everything that can depend on me to make this fight happen.”
BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR
Had Fury and the former undisputed cruiserweight champion fought, they would have crowned the first undisputed champion of the four belt era. Therefore, Fury’s sidestepping that legacy up for grabs to stage what is likely to be a glorified exhibition is disheartening and certainly a buzzkill.
If on the off chance that Fury loses to Ngannou, while he would retain his belt, the Usyk fight would be stripped of much luster. Provided that Fury does get past the MMA bruiser, then perhaps we can still see the fight for undisputed that so many want to see. So let’s hope that Krassyuk is able to make good on this promise.
