Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner to Unify at 130 in 2022!

After months and months of trash talk, unified 130-pound champion Mikaela Mayer (17-0, 5KOs) and WBC champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (12-1, 7KOs) will meet in a highly anticipated unification fight. Top Rank announced the match on their social media page.

Mayer and Baumgardner have gone back and forth throughout social squabbling over who’s the best fighter at 130. Mayer has been on record stating that her priority is to become undisputed. This put Baumgardner on her hit list after she brutally stopped former champion Terri Harper to claim the WBC strap.

As for Baumgardner, she’s supremely confident that she’s the best fighter in her division and has proclaimed so. In her back and forth with Mayer, she promised that the unified champion would get the same treatment as Harper did.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Baumgardner made the first defense of her WBC title this past April. She easily defeated former unified featherweight champion Edith Soledad Matthysse by unanimous decision. The win cleared the way for this matchup against Mayer to happen. As for Mayer, she easily defeated Ewa Brodnicka to win the vacant title back in October of 2020. She then followed that up with another unanimous decision win to defend her title against Erica Farias in June of 2021.

Last November, Mayer added the IBF title to her possession, beating Maiva Hamadouche by a unanimous decision. More recently, she defended both belts against Jennifer Han.

Now that the two ladies have signed on the dotted line, we’ll finally get to see who the cream of the crop is. The winner will be one fight away from being undisputed, as the division’s other champion is WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi (19-0-1, 5KOs).

There’s no date or venue set at this moment. 3Kings Boxing will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
