Rising Prospect Reito Tsutsumi Proving to be Among Japan’s Elite

Over the last 10 to 15 years, Japan has produced a remarkable number of world-class fighters. Many within the country believe the next boxer capable of achieving greatness is unbeaten junior lightweight Reito Tsutsumi (5-0, 4 KOs), a fighter some pundits have labeled the best overall prospect in boxing.

In his most recent outing, Tsutsumi demolished previously unbeaten Alvino Herrera Meza in just three rounds on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua-Kristian Prenga event. The dominant performance by the Tokyo native earned widespread praise from DAZN broadcasters and boxing fans across social media.

GAUDY AMATEUR PEDIGREE

Tsutsumi’s reputation was built long before he entered the professional ranks. He won multiple Japanese national championships, captured the 2021 World Youth Championships, and claimed the 2023 All-Japan University Championship.

His amateur accomplishments were so impressive that when he turned professional, the Japanese Boxing Commission awarded him an A-Class license. It’s honor that wasn’t even given to Naoya Inoue, who is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and a future Hall of Famer.

Since making his professional debut in May 2025, the 23-year-old has lived up to enormous expectations. His performances have even caught the attention of Turki Alalshikh, who has featured Tsutsumi on two Riyadh Season boxing cards.

The bout against Meza was expected to be a meaningful step up in competition. Instead, Tsutsumi turned it into a showcase, delivering what many considered the standout performance of the entire Joshua-Prenga card.

MOUNTAINTOP IN SIGHT

Tsutsumi also finds himself in a junior lightweight division that offers a realistic path to the top. Beyond unified champion Emanuel Navarrete and WBC title holder O’Shaquie Foster, the division lacks a deep group of established elite contenders. Currently ranked No. 14 by the WBA, those around Tsutsumi hope to see him crack the organization’s top ten by the end of the year before pursuing a world title opportunity in 2027.

Those are ambitious expectations, but based on everything Tsutsumi has shown so far, they don’t seem unrealistic. If his rapid development continues, Japan may very well have another boxing superstar on its hands.
