William Zepeda Decisions Lamont Roach & Aims for Undisputed
In his latest prizefight, William “Camaron” Zepeda (34-1, 27 KO’s) defeated Lamont Roach Jr. (25-2-3, 10 KO’s) by way of unanimous decision. When the tallies were revealed, Zepeda claimed the win to the tune of 117-111 (twice) and 118-110. Along with Roach’s scalp, Camaron took possession of the vacant WBC lightweight title with the spoils of war.
The win, which snapped a 13-month period of inactivity, was especially satisfying considering Zepeda was coming off a loss. In that duel, versus current WBO 140-pound champion Shakur Stevenson, Zepeda suffered a split decision points loss. Clearly the time off allowed his body the time to rejuvenate and come back fresh in this showdown with Roach. With Roach dealt with, Zepeda is ready to look for his next challenge.
When interrogated as to who he would like to dance with next, Camaron did not call out any single fighter. Instead, he expressed his desire to become undisputed. Presently, the belt holders at 135-pounds are Abdullah Mason (WBO) and Raymond Muratalla (IBF) with the WBA strap being vacant. To limit the menu even more, Muratalla has already announced that he will be moving up in weight and thereby vacating his title. So, this means that the only other functional champion in the division is Mason.
Mason was just victorious in a hometown battle versus Albert Bell this past July 4. Said to say, he and his team should be open to talks about staging their next in-ring campaign. Zepeda’s diverse, high-volume attack versus Mason’s sharp, aggressive boxing would make for a very exciting prizefight. Let’s see if their respective teams feel the same way!
