Mikaela Mayer Speaks On Potential Bout With Katie Taylor

One of the biggest fights of 2023 is the May 20 showdown between undisputed junior welterweight champion Cantelle Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs) and undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) in Dublin, Ireland. A woman who has a vested massive interest in that battle is former unified junior lightweight champion, Mikaela Mayer (18-1, 5 KOs), who would love an eventual fight with Taylor.

Mayer is in Ireland and will be ringside for Taylor vs Cameron. During an interview with Seconds Out, she mentioned doing some scouting and said her desire to fight Taylor would not wane if she lost to Cameron. Mayer views Taylor as a great fighter regardless, and her goal is to fight Taylor for the undisputed lightweight championship.

ENVISIONING A FIGHT WITH THE CHAMPION

When asked if she was willing to fight in Taylor’s home country of Ireland. Mayer said she recognizes that she is the B-side and would do whatever is necessary to land the fight. If it means facing Taylor in Ireland, so be it. In terms of what Mayer would have to do to get a victory over Taylor, the former 130-pound champion said she’s studied the lightweight champ and has a strategy in mind.

“Katie Taylor, I’ve been watching her for years. She has her style. She does it really, really well. But it’s a style that she’s been doing for a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of it. I’ve watched a lot of it, and I know it well.

“We’re definitely going to come up with a good game plan. But like I said, it’s going to be about winning every single round, not giving anything away, and not giving any little moment away.”

Mayer’s last outing took place in April 2023. In her debut bout in the lightweight division, the 32-year-old scored a ten-round unanimous decision victory over Lucy Wildheart to win the WBC Interim lightweight title.

HER TIME WILL COME

Regardless of the outcome of her match against Cameron, Taylor’s next bout will likely be a rematch with reigning undisputed featherweight champion Amanda Serrano. Mayer understands this reality, but feels she’s going to get her chance at Taylor and will be ready whenever it happens.
