Can the South African Road Warrior Once Again Rise to the Occasion Against Sunny Edwards?
IBF World Flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane (39-2, 26 KOs) is boxing’s true mystery man. At age 38, he keeps defeating father-time, defending the title while schooling youngsters who dare to challenge him.
Now the seasoned warrior from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is ready to step into the ring once again. On March 26, Top Rank, BT Sport, and MTK Global announced Mthalane’s next title defense will take place against Sunny Edwards (15-0, 4 KOs) on April 30 at the Copper Arena in London, England. The fight will headline a card that will air live on ESPN+.
The champ was supposed to fight on December 20, 2020 against Jayson Mama in his home country of South Africa. However, that fight was canceled due to promotional differences. Instead, he will now face Edwards, who is moving down in weight from 115-pounds.
When you are on the come-up, the old saying is, “never turn down a world title shot.” When you get an opportunity to fight for a world title, you take it, regardless of the opponent. Facing a fighter who has not lost since 2008, Edwards understands he is up against a skilled and very experienced vet.
Mthalane has not lost since 2008. His previous ring appearance was a 9th round TKO over multi-divisional world champion Akira Yaegashi in December 2019. The South African is old for a fighter and ancient for a lower-weight fighter, but is fighting better than ever.
