Caleb Plant Turns Up the Heat on Edgar Berlanga!
With his “I survived 12 rounds with Canelo tour” over, super middleweight fighter Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-1, 17 KO’s) has some questions to answer. Yet, one of them is getting redundant: Will Berlanga fight Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (23-2, 14 KO’s) now? The two have flirted with the notion of a showdown in person and on social media, yet nothing has materialized to date.
Three months ago Berlanga went head-to-head with unified 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and arguably lost every single round. In response to this thorough and robust defeat, The Chosen One celebrated like he brought home Olympic gold. On this side of the merriment however, Berlanga has his first loss and still needs a marquee win on his ledger.
Berlanga would have loved to sign on the dotted line with Jaime Munguia, but that was before Munguia last stepped in the ring. When he did, versus Bruno Surace, Munguia was flatlined in a shocking upset knockout loss. Seeing this change in fortune, Plant was quick to raise his hand one more time.
THREE CARD MONTE
Plant is unquestionably one of the elite in the division. Even better, Plant is coming off a thrilling knockout win over Trevor McCumby. Beating Sweethands instantly bestows credibility to The Chosen One. Luckily for him, or maybe not, Plant still is looking for all the smoke.
The would-be duel comes with a pre-built backstory as the two have traded insults for some time. Both have big names and command a great deal of attention in the boxing world. Plant however, has the monopoly of higher levels of achievement and true depth of resume. Ranked #4 (WBO), #4 (WBC) and #5 (WBA), Berlanga would be hard pressed to secure an opponent more visible, meaningful and lucrative than Plant.
To further impress the point, attempting to broker a fight with anyone before Plant would be tantamount to duck talk. If the two legal think tanks cannot hammer out a deal then fine, but to not earnestly try would be criminal. Whether it turns out to be true or not, there is fresh industry scuttlebutt alleging a match between Berlanga and Gabriel Rosado is next.
FACE THE MUSIC PLEASE!
While Rosado is a valiant fighter, the 18-year veteran is lightyears past his prime, lost his last four straight fights and hasn’t had a win since 2021. How Rosado, who is not touching the top 15 with a ten foot pole, is more favorable than Plant is anyone’s guess. However, before accusatory fingers start stabbing the air in Berlanga’s direction let’s separate fact from fancy.
If it turns out to be true that The Chosen One chose the softer, safer path of Gabe Rosado, then ridicule is rightfully in order. Or perhaps Berlanga walks as big as he talks and opts to dance with Plant next. Admittedly, this is wishful thinking. In any case, stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for all things boxing and the thrilling conclusion to the on-going Berlanga/Plant rivalry.
