Roach Jr Looks To Make A Statement Against Cruz

Roach Jr vs Cruz Golden Boy on ESPN 2

If you’re not a big puncher fighting on the road, in hostile territory can be a dicey proposition when you have to rely on the judges for a fair shake. That is the challenge that once again awaits undefeated junior lightweight prospect Lamont Roach Jr., when he takes on Orlando Cruz, tonight on Golden Boy on ESPN 2 live from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Roach Jr., 16-0 6KO, has fought on the road for a good portion of his pro career. Cruz, 25-6-1 13KO, is a veteran fighter who has experience on the world championship level.

This is the type of fight that would be typical progression for a highly touted prospect such as Roach Jr. It’s another step up while eyeing eventual match ups with some of the bigger names at 130lb.

Cruz has lost his last two fights, including a TKO defeat to former WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan. He is still considered a game fighter with pretty good hand speed, moves fairly well and likes to punch in combination.

This will be Roach Jr.’s first fight outside the continental U.S. It’s another opportunity for the young man to shine and he must seize the moment while trying to make a statement.
