Santa Cruz Back Up Plans

It’s no secret that WBA super world super featherweight Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KO’s) is gunning for a fight with Gervonta “Tank” Davis (23-0, 22 KO’s). The high-volume Mexican boxer has been calling for the bout from every roof top, mountain peak and camera that he can find.

IF NOT TANK, THEN WHO?

At the moment, given the industry rumblings, it appears there is an excellent chance that bout could be next. However, in the sport of boxing, it’s never good to get too excited about something that has not actually come to pass because anything can happen. So while his greatest energy is being placed in securing a fight with Tank, Cruz is keeping his other options at the forefront of his mind.

While granting an exclusive interview to Fight Hub TV, El Terremoto shed a bit of light on who he would want to tangle with if not Davis.

“If that fight falls off there are other big names. You know, Gary Russell, he just won, that would be another great fight. And you know Joseph Diaz, he calling me out, he wants to meet right there [at the Staples Center] and there are other big fights that could get made too, but I want the Gervonta fight first.”

FIGHT CONTRACT BLUES

For Santa Cruz, the whole ordeal of attempting to land one of the big fights has been somewhat a draining affair. From the inside of the storm, he can clearly see all the moving parts that make signing a significant bout so problematic.

At the same time, El Terremoto understands why the fans, standing on the outside, become so frustrated that the super fights are not being churned out. Being able to appreciate both sides, Cruz just tries to remain calm and disciplined in his training while the situation works itself out.

“If the fans would be in my shoes, they will understand because it’s not up to us fighters to make the fight. We have to go through a team, then they go through another people and it goes back and forth and it’s really hard to just make fights and not being in our shoes.

…I thought the fight against me and him was going to happen after I think the Rivera fight. I think that was going to happen, me and Gary Russell, but I don’t know what happened. It didn’t come out but other opportunities came to go up to 130 and look for another title and I took it.”

Although the Cruz v Russell bout never materialized, let’s just hope that fortune shines on the dust-up with Tank Davis! Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing for all the latest news and updates.
