Ellie Scotney v Mary Romero Could Have Title Implications!

On October 29, the super bantamweight division will host a fight between Mary Romero (8-2, 2KO) and Ellie Scotney (5-0). The winner could fight either WBA champion Mayerlin Rivas or IBF champion Cherneka Johnson.

Romero, a 37-year-old Spanish boxer, has come a long way from losing two fights earlier in her career. She is currently on a seven-fight win streak and has held the EBU European title since 2020. In her last outing, Romero traveled into hostile territory and conquered undefeated Italian Maria Cecchi via unanimous decision.

Scotney, now contracted with Matchroom Boxing, is an accomplished amateur that captured the attention of promoter Eddie Hearn. Believed to be the most skilled bantamweight by UK fans, she won the 2017 Elite national amateur title and the English Youth title. She currently holds the WBA Inter-Continental title, and fans remember her for calling out current IBF bantamweight champion Ebanie Bridges.

THE WINNER’S CHAMPIONSHIP OPTIONS

The winner between Romero and Scotney could have a championship opportunity lying in wait. Both fighters are highly ranked. Romero is ranked #3 (WBA) and #4 (IBF) while Scotney holds the IBF #2 and #5 WBA spots.

This puts both fighters on a collision course with either the WBA or IBF champions. The WBA champion, Rivas, is the division’s longest-reigning champion (since 2020). In her last outing, she sliced up challenger Karina Fernandez in four rounds to retain the title.

The IBF champion, Johnson, showed serious heart overcoming a nasty cut en route to a dominating performance over former WBC bantamweight champion Susie Ramadan.

With a championship opportunity possibly looming in the background, fans can watch all the action live on DAZN on October 29 at Wembley Arena.
